In this course I’ve learned to challenge my own opinions and beliefs. I often found myself asking, why do I feel this way? Or what if I was in a different situation? A lot of “what if’s” and playing devil’s advocate with myself took place during this course. This surprised me because generally I have been known to be “set in my ways”, I’ve always been open to change but on certain issues, my viewpoints have never really been challenged and once I was required to do so, I learned a lot about myself and why I feel the way I do.
ReplyDeleteIf there were no barriers such as time and money, I would most likely take another course in philosophy. I genuinely enjoy discussing dilemmas and learning why people think and feel the way they do. In all honesty however, I really just want to be done with school for a while.
I feel like I have gained a better understanding of the philosophical dimensions related to the study of biomedical ethics. In the medical career field, we are faced with important decisions on a daily basis. Often times, these can be life changing ethical decisions that need to be thoroughly considered from all aspects. A deeper understanding of why something is considered right versus wrong and/or why the individual feels something is right versus wrong needs to be well understood and thought out when making these important decisions.
I have a better appreciation for the relevance of metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical questions in my daily life. More so is the knowledge of these studies and what they truly are. Before this course I didn’t even know those words existed, nor did I realize I utilize this type of knowledge on a daily basis.
I think I have improved slightly with analysis, critiquing not so much. I’ve never been a fan of challenging others beliefs or pointing out areas of weakness, lack of knowledge, or mistakes. I do not like confrontation, or the possibility of hurting other’s feelings when it’s not beneficial. If critiquing someone’s work allows for the individual to learn and grow from my “critiquing” then so be it but often times I found in this course, that I would agree with my peer however, the assignment required me to argue against their viewpoint. As far as written communication, I definitely received a lot of practice these last eight weeks, that’s for sure. Being an online class, oral communication was very limited so I don’t feel like that applies.
Overall, I enjoyed this course as challenging as it was at times to come up with a solid answer I could be proud of. I appreciate the fact that it challenged me to really think outside of my comfort zone and explore my views, beliefs, and thought processes.
I believe she challenged us every week with the case studies. I enjoyed reading everyone's different views and ideas. I think we all developed a deeper understanding of the ethical issues we see daily.
DeleteErin, I too feel that I have been set in my ways with certain topics. This course does force you to play devil's advocate; to see other sides and opinions. A challenge to your own belief system - in a good way.
DeleteI agree. It makes you play devil's advocate.
DeleteI agree with you, Erin. Some weeks the posts were tough as Dr. Cate purposely posted an assignment that would challenge us and make key points she wanted us to take with us. I think you did a wonderful job, and you're very kind and encouraging with your posts.
DeleteI also enjoyed the challenges. Made me think outside the box quite often.
DeleteI also enjoyed learning more about my classmates viewpoints, not to mention my own reflection.
Delete• What have you learned in this course that surprised you?
ReplyDeleteI’ve learned that philosophy courses are so much unlike traditional courses in which you learn the accepted information and you apply that. I’ve learned that it is okay to think for yourself and apply that in some courses, like this. It’s much like a previous teacher/ mentor used to say “my job is to make you think for yourself”. So often in studies, we are asked to fall back on data we’ve learned and it doesn’t require us to truly use our brains and apply our thoughts. In life, in nursing, we use our critical thinking skills all the time but, prior to this, rarely in academia. I’ve learned how to apply my critical thinking skills in an academic setting. I’ve learned that I enjoy the process and I have many thoughts about so much that I want to share and cultivate. I’ve learned just how much I do want to grow as a thinker.
• Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?
If cost and time weren’t barriers, I would definitely take another philosophy course. I am positive I will, actually. This experience has awakened the adult learner in me, and I do not want to stop when we finish in November. With each assignment I’ve found myself looking for more information that would apply, studying beyond what was assigned to learn more, to understand better. I’m certain I would love to advance to the next level and look deeper.
• Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study of biomedical ethics?
I think I have gained a beginner’s basic knowledge of some of the philosophical dimensions of the study of biomedical ethics. I know there are many more ethical theories, and a much more in depth knowledge of them to be attained. Unless this was one’s primary focus, and they taught it or practiced it daily, I don’t think a person can have an in-depth understanding of this vast, subjective study. I think the most important thing is having the ability to use resources to research possible ethical theories and applications of them in the past, having the cognitive ability/ critical thinking skills to process those and critique them, and having the receptiveness to allow those to evolve when your research enlightens you with new data and philosophical ideas.
• Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical questions in our daily lives?
I very much have developed an appreciation for the entire process and all the refreshing views, ideas, and questions it presents. So often, like much of society, I get stuck in the routine of a busy life; my days are spent meeting requirements, going through the motions. While daily life requires thinking, I fail to move outside of my box of my scope. To be presented weekly with cases, scenarios that have made me move beyond my box, out of my comfort zone. I have found myself thinking about everything differently. I have truly been transcended to a higher reality, stretching for that perception just beyond. I think more about the things I shrugged aside before. I want to answer those difficult, abstract questions, I want to understand at a different level, beyond the nature and scope of my daily life. I find myself applying our ethical theories we’ve covered to everything I cross in my daily life, debating with myself, critiquing happenings. It has really awakened an awareness, a being within. “I think, therefore I am”….
(Continued from above)
Delete• Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course?
I do think my ability to analyze and critique have improved, and are improving, but I know I’m still a novice and could stand to improve much more. I think just the knowledge that anyone can analyze and critique, and the desire to do so and reap that intellectual/ philosophical growth is a beginning. If cultivated it can lead to true personal growth in these areas. My written and oral communication have improved, but also can stand to improve greatly. It would help if my brain would actually see what my eyes are reading when I proof stuff, so I wouldn’t completely read over things that deescalate me from being a person to an arsonist! It’s through practicing that we do improve. I’ve enjoyed the process of this improvement from my first blogs and paper to the present. I’ve noted how you have meticulously plotted that growth for us in how you have assigned specific tasks in the blogs/ papers than lend to different aspects of our growth in the way we apply philosophy and in our thinking process. I thank you for that brilliant orchestration and the ability to grow, and the epiphany you’ve facilitated.
I think you've done really well with critiquing and analyzing! I enjoy reading your posts, it’s clear that you always put a lot of thought and effort into them.
DeleteShelley, You have done a great job in this class. Your posts are always very in depth and insightful. Maybe you have a future in bio medical ethics?!
DeleteShelley, there were some weeks that I didn't even post a "original" post because it seemed like you covered all the topics. You have a true understanding and I agree with Jocelyn, maybe biomedical ethics is you next calling.
DeleteThank you, Erin, Jocelyn and Kourtney. I think everyone did amazingly with their posts. I did take the assignments very seriously and wanted to be certain I challenged myself to get the full benefit. Plus, I have no social life, so ethics was my evening social focus.
Deleteway to so Shelley! I am impressed by your commitment and your eagerness to learn.
DeleteThe majority of what I have learned was more about myself. This class has drove me to question what I think and believe and really explore my thoughts and emotions about taboo topics.
ReplyDeleteI would take another course I love debating issues like this and exploring these topics.
I do feel like I have a better understanding of bioethics but I do feel like with more time my knowledge and appreciation can only expand. I do hope to take another course like this when I get a masters.
I have developed an appreciation for the relevance of metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical questions. I have been surprised on how much I questioned what I believe is right. Although I did feel like after I explored my thoughts and emotions I went with my initial gut reaction.
I believe this class has improved my writing skills I also believe that my skills to critique have improved as well.
I feel the same way as you Alex. I learned a lot about myself as well and challenged myself to understand why I feel the way I do on certain issues.
DeleteIt makes a difference when we are challenged with the simple word why. What is best for our patients can be answered differently by everyone in this class including the instructor. This class was unique in that it has us challenging our own beliefs.
DeleteI'm glad you enjoyed the debate. I for one most certainly do not like confrontation or debate, but in this class no one made it uncomfortable. It is good to see others views on the taboo subject. It helps to expand our own world views a little bit more.
DeleteAlex, I very much enjoyed reading your posts. I have definitely gotten a sense of who you are and your steadfastness to stand behind your convictions. Well done!
DeleteI agree Chris when the word why is posed it makes you think about why do I believe this way and sometimes if forces you to change other times it makes your belief that much stronger.
DeleteI have enjoyed this course more than I thought I would have. I enjoyed the first day when we watched the series from Harvard. The different opinions that the students had about choices and sacrifice. We are in the medical field and sometimes I believe we forget that are patients are also individuals. With the work load and acuity of the patients, we lose some compassion towards them. This class made that very apparent. I have taken what we have learned from the class and I am trying to integrate it in my job. I enjoyed about the different theories we were taught. In nursing we learned about the different theorist of nursing and models such as Erik Erickson. This class was another tool and utilizing critical thinking.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely take another class if I get the opportunity. I like thinking more holistic than what we are trained in nursing school. There is not a day that goes by that you do not see an ethical issue arise. I would like to think further classes in bioethics would open up doorways for additional options for our patients.
I have a very basic understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study of biomedical ethics. I wish this class was a semester class instead of 7 weeks. I think the class is rushed. I would rather take 4 classes over a semester than sprint through 7 or 8 weeks. This wold help with the retention of what we have learned.
I have definitely gained appreciation for the relevance of metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical questions that we face every day. This class makes you want to ask the question, why is this good for my patient? Are we treating every aspect of the patient, not only physically, but also spiritually and mentally? Do we really no what is best for others and their families. I know after watching the movie, The "Diving Bell and The Butterfly", how do we know what is going on inside of someones head that can no longer communicate? I have questioned that a lot since watching that movie. I have a new appreciation for these ethical questions.
I believe I have become a better communicator through the work in this course. Most of us have never had to blog before. No papers were written during the courses to obtain our ADN. I feel the more we write, and the more you critique, we are sharpening our skills.
I think you have done very well communicating with your posts. Your laid back, patient persona definitely come through. You have showed great reasoning and I've enjoyed reading your posts. This is definitely my first time blogging. I'm surprised how much it helped me to personally grow.
DeleteWhat have you learned in this course that surprised you? I thought that I was pretty solid in most of my beliefs, but this course definitely pushed my limits to what I thought. It brought up a lot of hard topics that really made me think on what I would do/how I would feel about. The what ifs in many of these scenarios made me think much deeper than I ever have on a variety of topics.
ReplyDeleteWould you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers? Honestly I don’t think I would. I am very uncomfortable talking about a lot of these subjects. I am kind of a non-confrontational kind of person and don’t like to debate if I don’t have to. I did enjoy the class though. Everyone in it had a unique view and people were courteous and not too harsh.
Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study of biomedical ethics? I do believe I have a better grasp of biomedical ethics. In the medical field we are faced with many of these issues and I now have a firmer grasp on why or how people come to their conclusions.
Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical questions in our daily lives? There are so many things in our daily lives that this have an ethical background in our daily lives. I think especially because I work in healthcare I deal with it more than others in a day to day routine.
Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course? I am still not the greatest at APA, but I would like to think this course has made it easier to analyze and critique. I do not like to argue or play devil’s advocate, but this course forced me to look at other viewpoints. My communication has improved in respect to talking about difficult topics. Being an online class I don’t believe my oral communication was much improved, but I did find myself discussing some of these topics with my husband and occasionally debating some of the topics and using the ethical theories to explain or help both of us understand.
Yes Jocelyn, I agree that the cases we have read about in this course, has definitely pushed my thinking to a deeper level. And like you I am uncomfortable talking about a lot of these subjects, but this course has 'grown me up' in this area.
DeleteJocelyn, I think if you were uncomfortable talking about some of these subjects, it never showed. You did an excellent job analyzing and stating your case. I did notice you're a big softie. I bet you cry at movies like I do.
DeleteI know! I felt myself feeling one way then after dieting through my thoughts and feeling I started feeling another way. The hardest was arguing for an opposing view!
DeleteI have learned about many things that I was not aware of that is going on in the world today. For example, about some of the cases regarding genetics and the ability to not only do a gene mapping for diseases, but for genetics enhancement. I probably would take another philosophy course if time and money were not barriers. Because of this course I have a better understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study of biomedical ethics. I most definitely have developed an appreciation for the relevance of theses issues that raise ethical questions on a regular basis. I feel this course has helped me improve on my skills to analyze and critique ethical subjects and opinions.
ReplyDeleteI think your posts were very good, Gloria. You did a nice job applying ethics and sharing your wisdom.
DeleteI agree, I think I live under a rock most of the time!

ReplyDeleteWhat have you learned in this course that surprised you? I think that what surprised me most about this course is how many different views I found myself disagreeing with. Not saying that anyone is wrong by any means but I really felt myself questioning a lot of peoples opinions.
Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?
I wouldn't mind it but I really think that I do better when I talk about things and not have to write them and I would rather it be an in person class, face to face.
Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study of biomedical ethics? I think I have a basic understanding. I really think that this would have been better for me face to face. But thats okay, I think that it wasn't terrible.
Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical questions in our daily lives? Yes
Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course? I think that they have improved some. I for one hate writing papers. I do like though how you challenged us to at least respond to others so we were actually having to see what other peoples thoughts were and not just act like we did. Sometimes it gave me a better understanding why some people feel a certain way about an issue. It was very informative.
Kourtney, I was also surprised at how much my opinions with others differed at times. I was, however, uncomfortable debating those issues, as I do respect different views and I hate to "argue". I think you did a great job at stating your points.
DeleteAt the end of the day we are all professional, I don't think there is any need to be concerned about being open.
DeleteI agree I don't really prefer to put myself out there all the time but it wasn't that bad at all.
DeleteI think what i learned most in these class, which did surprise me, is that I am pretty jaded. I have learned a lot about myself in the last 8 weeks in regard to myself. I guess i a m just frustrated with people being unappreciative and assuming that the world owes them something for nothing.
ReplyDeleteI would take more classes like this if time was not an issue. It is beneficial for nurses for sure.
This course has involved a lot of writing and critiquing and I do feel like I have benefited from it.
I agree Jess, I feel like I learned a lot about my feelings toward certain situations. I also benefited from the writing.

ReplyDeleteWhat have you learned in this course that surprised you?
ReplyDeleteThat I can look at both sides of an issue and not have to agree or disagree with either. I can look at it ethically and take time to make an informed decision on what I believe.
Would you take another course in philosophy if money/time weren't major barriers?
I would take another philosophy class. I would have like this class more if we were actually in class. I feel the information would have been more beneficial in a classroom setting.
Do you have an understanding of the philosophical dimensions of the study of biomedical ethics?
Yes, a much better understanding.
Have you developed an appreciation for the relevance of metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical questions in our daily lives?
Absolutely. I have learned a lot.
Have you improved in your skills of analysis and critique, as well as in written and oral communication due to this course?
There was a ton of blogging and writing. I feel this course has improved my writing ability along with my ability to critique articles and stories. I wish the blog spot and assignments could have been organized in a way that we were guaranteed not to miss an assignment. I felt like I was always searching in different places to find out what was due.
I did enjoy the class. Thank you Dr. Cate!
I agree, this class would have been very beneficial to have in a class room setting. Would make for some interesting discussions!
DeleteI have learned a lot in this course. I have gained a better understanding of myself and my own ethical and moral views. This class presented some very challenging ethical dilemmas. Each week I found myself struggling with what I felt was morally right. It was definitely hard!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading my classmates take on issues. It helped me to maybe have a different perspective. It has also helped me in my ethical decision making. We are faced with many ethical issues on a daily basis, especially in our chosen career. It helped me reflect on certain situations and prepare me better for new ethical situations that may arise.
I would definitely take another philosophy course. In this course I have developed an deeper appreciation fore thick questions. I feel I have gained a good basic knowledge of biomedical ethics and feel my skills for such have improved after having this course.
